RNLI Tamar fitting after 500 hours trials

This fixing shows fared in stainless steel straps which are clamped around the composite stern tube, the shaft has zero forward and aft movement allowing the grey composite spool material (toughRtex™) to almost fill the gap between prop and bearing, enhancing water flow from stern tube to prop blades.

These cutters were installed by DML in Plymouth.

A more difficult fitting on a 2" shaft motor sailor (CW35). The problem involves having the cutter rigidly fitted close to the prop to withstand loads generated when cutting. A tube support is the only option. This was fabricated out of 316l stainless with an internal flange welded in place to use the existing stern gland mounting bolts. The cutter was then bolted to an internal spacer at the rear of the tube, allowing the cutter to be positioned close to the spool.

The final result is pictured below.

A Custom installation on a large shaft. Due to the overhang to allow for shaft movement the cutter is welded to a plate to spread the load. The cutting surface normally a spool consists of a sleeve of ablative material over the propeller hub.

An S25 installed on large hydraulic drive of roughly 1.8m diameter the cutter can just be seen mounted to the motor housing, with the blades running on a ring attached to the prop hub.
